How do you join The Starlight Circle Players? Volunteer to participate in a production. It is suggested (although not mandatory in any way) that any prospective playwright who lives within easy commute distance and especially directors, consider volunteering on another production or event and getting to know the troupe members prior to casting. PLEASE NOTE: TSCP produces musical theater that has a magical/ritual element.
For Play Directors: Do you have a project you would like to propose? Are you interested in directing a future production with TSCP?
Please contact us at: TSCP Telephone number: 510-647-5268 General info e-mail: starlightcircleplayers - @ - yahoo.com and place "play direction" in the subject line OR: Go to the "Upcoming Productions" page on this site and contact the playwright or project organizer at the address given.
Proposing your project. How it works:
- Contact TSCP, one of the founding directors or the TSCP (position open as of 8/11/07) Artistic Director will contact you.
- The founding directors or playwright will ask to meet with you and get to know you. If we are a good "fit" -- we can then proceed.
- You will be asked to present your proposed project at the Troupe Convocation in February for the coming season. Please use the playwrights' submission guidelines below as your guide.
For Playwrights: TSCP is a writer-friendly troupe. As a playwright whose project is accepted, you will have a great deal of control (and, the correlating responsibilities) over your play. For more about TSCP, please look around our website.
Play Submission Guidelines
Play submission address: doclezlie_at_gmail.com and cc to laurhot_at_sbcglobal.net
Please send, via an MS word attachment, a proposal including: sample scenes with dialogue from your play (about 20 pages), a synopsis and cast list, (including any technical details of the production you think are important for us to know) and one or two MP3 or .wav files of sample music from your play. Please remember to include your contact information and a little bit about yourself.
Hard copy submissions: You may send your proposal via snail mail to: TSCP “Play Submission” 2998 Shasta Rd. Berkeley, Ca. 94708 Music should be recorded on a CD. Hard copy should be in a standard format: cover/query letter, 2 copies of unbound, numbered pages; .12 pt. standard font, your name & contact information clearly included on the title page. Music should be recorded on a CD. Any sheet music included should be transposed for piano and charted for guitar. (You do not need to include sheet music until we request a copy of the whole play.) We have pretty free form guidelines, however, the “musts” are:
* a full length play written for the stage * small-ish cast (2 to about 15) including “the band” * few or simple sets - (we love costumes, though) * long on story with terrific music and well-developed characters (I know that’s vague - but, it is the essential element) * clearly a musical * Have a magical element (any folkloric, ethnicity, or esoteric tradition) * Not be a “children’s play” - Although families and children enjoy our productions, we do not "play" to them or choose our plays specifically for them. * No overt “topical” political themes or a political agenda * While we appreciate the handling of “difficult” subject matter concerning human experience, we will not produce plays that contain gratuitous graphic violence or sex, or that denigrate any person’s age, gender, race, ethnicity, orientation, religion, or other differences. * All copyrights and licensing matters are the author’s responsibility and the author must show proof of release, payment of royalties, and all permissions prior to casting. * TSCP prefer plays that have never been produced, but for the right project, we will consider mounting a production that has “seen the boards”.
What we do: The playwright may choose a director, or direct him- or herself (provided he or she has some theater experience and is comfortable in that role.) The Starlight Circle Players are an all-volunteer troupe and cannot guarantee participation of any single player or artist, but will collaborate with a playwright on all aspects of mounting a production, including fund raising, casting, promotions, design and coaching. So far, we have mounted two plays, and are working on our third production. As of this writing, we do not have a “home” theater, but will commit to finding and negotiating a venue on behalf of any accepted play and playwright.
Thank you for your interest – we should get back to you in about a month after receipt of your proposal if we want to continue. It’s a somewhat long process from query to acceptance, acceptance to casting – please be patient. Any productions we accept will be considered for the 2008/9 season.
